Own Record Label

As part of our project, we needed to create our own record label to represent and distribute the artist and song we are making a music video for. First of all, we needed to decide on a name for our record label, and we wanted to choose a relevant name for the label which would help portray our specific genre of music, which is alternative rock. To ensure that we are portraying our music genre through our record label, we thought two different names for the label which are 'Enigma' and 'Alter Native'. However, as a group we could not decide what name would be most effective. Therefore we decided to gain some feedback on the names through a questionnaire, where we visited some students from the sixth form of our target audience of both genders aged between 16 - 19 years, and asked them for their opinion on their favourite name. After collecting tallies on each name, we finally accumulated 31 votes, with 16 votes for the name Alter Native, and 15 votes for Enigma. Therefore, due to the higher votes, we chose to use the name Alter Native Records for our own record label. This name is effective as it is a play on phrase taken from the word 'alternative', and also got more votes from the audience asked, which therefore shows that our record label will attract our target audience to ensure that it will gain in popularity and will be a good representation of the artist and song we use for our video.

Record Label Logo Designs

Once we had decided what name to give our record company, we then needed to design a complete logo. The logo of a company is used to brand an item or subject, and a logo will use different text fonts, colours, styles, imagery and shapes to create a memorable and individual design. The design that we create should help the audience realise that the record company are a music based company, and also should help represent music. In order to help design one specific logo for our record company, I copleted some research on existing music based record company logos to find out the similarities and differences between the logos, and the main factors of a popular logo. From the research, I completed three different designs that I believe could be used as our music record company. In addition, the other members of my group also designed a few different logos that could be used for the record company, in order for us to bring all of the designs together and eventually decide what design we want to use. Below are the designs that my group and myself have designed for our music record company.

To help decide what design we should use for our company, we needed to narrow down all of the designs we have created, to five final designs. To do this, we all wrote down our favourite design ideas out of them all, and then conferred with eachother, deciding on the top five that could possibly be used for our logo. to ask our target audience of males and females aged between 15 and 19 years old for their feedback, as we need our record company logo to be appealing and eye-catching to our target audience.

After asking 24 males and females aged between 15 and 19, we finally accumulated some information and votes on what design was the most favourited by our target audience. Out of the five designs, numbered 2,3,4,5 and 7, Sam's design for Alter Native which was number 3, won the most votes, with 16 votes. Due to this being the favourite, we have decided to use this design as it is appealing to our target audience. However, a few of the people we asked, said that they would make a small change to the design, to make it look more professional and clean cut. Therefore, we have produced the same winning design but on computer software, to make the logo appear more professional, and for us to see what it would look like if it were to be drawn out on a computer.
